Jolene Venn of Vula vintage & modern market-WOMAN WEDNESDAY

Last weeks inspirational Girl boss!

Today’s inspirational woman is another fellow vintage hustler here in Whistler @jo.ontheroad is the founder and owner of @vulaapparel Jolene has been in the fashion biz for pretty much her entire adult life and has been in the vintage game since 2009. Since then she has completed fashion school, and worked in different cities buying and managing stores, before opening Vula in 2018.

Not only does she sell beautiful vintage pieces but she’s always so supportive of us, and generous with her wealth of knowledge in not just vintage but business and retail as well, it’s truly inspiring to be in the vintage game next to a woman like you! This is the epitome of what women Wednesday is all about women supporting women! ✊🏽🧡

1. Where’d you grow up and where do you live now?

I grew up in Cape Town, South Africa and immigrated to Victoria on the island when I was 16. I’ve lived in 9 cities in Canada, but Whistler feels like home now.

2. What is your definition of strength?

To me, the ultimate form of strength is being able to pull yourself out of darkness and back into the light without giving up. It’s finding and taking every ounce of that power within yourself to face your fears, fight for your worth and fight to live, in spite of what life throws at you.

3. What is something that’s important to you now that never used to be?

Self love. I seem to put more effort into making sure everyone else is okay and taken care of. I have always just accepted what I was given, even when I knew I deserved better. Im learning to take care of my own needs now and fight for what I truly deserve.

4. How would you describe your style?

My daily style is usually skate/surf/sporty for running around. I do love dressing up. In summ1er I love to bring out my feminine side in beautiful dresses and bohemian style. In the winter my style can be be more artsy and edgy. I love sustainable clothing and unique one of a kind vintage pieces. I love everything 70s!

5. Favourite food to cook at home?

I’d have to say a good old South African braai (bbq) with the family! I love Eastern foods too and healthy, fresh farm to table dishes!

6. What’re 3 books on your bookshelf? I always have a few on the go that are usually business, nutrition, survival stories or exotic adventures in the East. I just bought The Omega principle and also reading Eat Real to Heal and Three Brains.

7. What’s something you want to accomplish in the next year?

Incorporating more “play” into my life. Finding passion in sports again, not just in my work. There are a few new sports I want to try out and get good at.

8. Tell us something people would find surprising about you:

I wanted to be an Olympic Gymnast. Started at age 4/5, Skipped 12 grades in 5 years. I got provincial colours age 5 and got put on a pre-elite training team. I’d do practice after school until 9pm. It was very disciplined and really hard work but I loved it!

9. Favourite movie?

How do you choose, so many out there! Maybe Memoirs of a Geisha, but also anything Feel good, funny and fantasy are top choices. I love movies based in the 70s like Dazed and Lords of Dogtown. I’m a sucker for shark and caving movies!

10. How do you want people to remember you?

For my heart.
