This week's WW feature is my awesome nail tech Carolyn who own @pow_nails_squamish ! Like a lot of our features, Carolyn not only owns and runs her own business she also juggles a side hustle as well! By day Carolyn is part of the awesome team at VCH in the Whistler Health Care centre working as an admitting clerk. If you have had a broken bone and been to the fracture clinic you might recognize her! By night she’s doing her thing working on her own business cleaning up cuticles, shaping nails, and painting the tiniest and most amazing canvases. Carolyn is s also a super talented artist, so nails are her creative outlet. When she’s not working, you can find her snowboarding, scuba diving, and hanging out with her super cool cat! Everyone believes they have the best cat until they meet Carolyn’s cat, “King” he’s like the cat version of a Labrador! Anyway if you want a set of cool nails, arty or not, head over to @pow_nails_squamish ! Not only will you get some dope nails but Carolyn is also the nicest person, has lots of good chat, and is a great listener so it’s like getting your nails done and a mini therapy sesh all wrapped up in one!
Here’s our chat with her!!
1. Where’d you grow up and where do you live now?
I grew up in Edmonton, AB. Despite being cold my community was full of creative, wonderful people, and filled with art and music! I moved to Whistler in 2015, where I lived for 4 years. I am now home living in Squamish.
2. What is your definition of strength?
Being able to endure the dark and the light. Listening to my intuition, and leading with my heart open. 3. What is something that’s important to you now that never used to be? Balance. I have worked 2 jobs since I was 19. I was a busy body. Working long hours thinking I was getting ahead. Moving to Whistler taught me about having a work/life/play balance. I’ll always have hustle and drive but rest is just as important for success.
4. How would you describe your style?
My own. Almost always second hand, consignment, or vintage. Except for underwear and socks, I buy new, and I’ll always spend money on footwear. A good pair of boots will make sure you can get anywhere.
5. Favourite food to cook at home?
Tofu wings (thecuriouschickpea recipe) BLT Gin & Tonic’s
6. What’re 3 books on your bookshelf?
I just started This Changes Everything by Naomi Klein. I just finished The Alchemist (finally read it) and The Electric Kool-aid Acid Test by Tom Wold Other favourites on my bookshelf are The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold (favourite fiction). The sun and her flowers by Rupi Kaur
7. What’s something you want to accomplish in the next year?
I am focused on continuing to root down in Squamish and connecting with nail clients here. Also establishing a morning routine especially working out. When I didn’t work for the 3 months this year because of Covid, daily exercise saved me. It's so important for my mental health.
8. Tell us something people would find surprising about you.
I have both a Canadian and a Scottish passport.
9. Favourite movie? It is so hard to choose just one, but I never get tired of watching Sixteen Candles
10. How do you want people to remember you?
For being happy, easy-going, and always up for a dance party.
